Canva: Graphic Design on the Go Review
Canva is a design tool with thousands of templates for anything, from book covers, CVs and infographics to social media headers and stories. Download Canva for iOS and Android, and make your phone or tablet a perfect design studio!
It’s all template-based. To create your own header, cover, post, or comic strip, you can just download a template and replace its elements with yours. You can add images from your gallery, download them from the Internet, or draw in other editors. Then the app lets you export your results to social media or save them locally.
The app is made similar to, say, office apps, though different tools are required for graphics. When it comes to editing pictures or their elements, it’s all very intuitive. We’ve seen it a thousand times in other editors: tap to edit text, move two fingers to rotate, pinch to zoom, and so on. Being intuitive is a big advantage.
To use the app, you need to authorize Google or Facebook credentials. Then you are able to start various projects, using cloud templates. There are some for posters, presentations, logos, cards, brochures, books, magazines and CD covers, and other purposes. Yes, phone wallpapers and comic strips are here too, as well as Instagram stories and Facebook covers.
There is a text search and a catalogue where you can find those you need. You don’t have to download templates separately: just open them right from the cloud. There is also a Favorites section for quick access, as there are thousands of them.
Templates are easily editable. Each element is interactive, so you can remove it, replace the picture, type another text, and so on. You can also select fonts for texts, set background colors, transparency, or even add more pages to create either a longer story or multiple versions in one file.
Cross-Platform Use 5/5
The app is available for iOS and Android, with about the same functionality. Most features are cloud-based and working the same way on both platforms. Both platforms, though, need to be rather fresh: iOS 11.3, or Android 4.1. So, even phones and tables of 2013 are capable of running Canva, if they are properly updated and not short of memory.
Canva offers lots of extras; along with free templates, there are paid ones that look even more attractive. They are, though, offered for credits, and you can buy these credits for real currency. This makes the app a big content store. All you buy on iOS remains available when you install the app and authorize it on Android, and vice versa.
The Bottom Line
For your intention to make creative posts on social media or create drafts for your covers and collages on the go, Canva is the perfect solution. It provides the base, and if you want to buy some extras, you only pay for them. No subscription, and no overpricing for stuff you’ll probably never use.Collapse
