Chunky Comic Reader Review

Try an app that makes your comics look great, makes reading them a pleasure, and takes all the friction out of importing and managing them.

• Ultra clean and simple to use
• Smart upscaling makes even low-res comics look great
• Auto contrast/tint fixes yellow pages and faded ink
• Self-organising library - just drop in your comics and go
• Download comics in the background while you read, directly from your cloud file-storage service or the web
• Upgrade to pro, and download from your PC, Mac or NAS as well
• Parental controls let you flag specific comics as ok, and passcode-lock everything else out of sight
• Single-page or two-up page view
• Right-to-left reading mode
• Post screenshots directly to Twitter, Facebook, or Reddit

Chunky supports CBZ, CBR, CBT and PDF comics, and understands ComicRack and ComicBookLover tags.

It can browse and download directly from iCloud Drive, Dropbox, Transporter, Google Drive, OneDrive, Amazon Cloud Drive, Box, Pogoplug, Mediafire and Copy, and you can copy files in and out with iTunes on your computer or download them via the built-in web browser.

Upgrade to Pro and it'll also connect to Mac or Windows shared folders, FTP or SFTP servers, ComicStreamer, Calibre or Ubooquity libraries, and run a mini web and webDAV server you can use to copy files in and out.

I am an extremely stingy user. If there is a free solution available that meets my needs, I use it. There are very FEW apps on my iPad that are paid, and of those, it is because it was the only way to get the features I needed, or the experience was far superior to any free product I could find. Enter Chunky, the very first app that I have paid for a Pro upgrade, even though there was ABSOULTELY NO NECESSITY to upgrade. The app is basically given away for free, fully functional. It is not a cut down version in the least. The pro features are just icing on the cake. At least, for me, they are. You may place more importance on the pro features than I did. I just know that I could have continued to use the app without upgrading and not be missing out on anything essential. It is no small feat to give me a fully functioning product, and it be so good, that I simply felt compelled to pay for it anyway. So, stop your search for a comic book reader for the ipad, you have found it. Even if you do not spend a dime, it is still the best reader in the store. However, after using it, I am fairly certain you will want to give this author your money anyway, just like I did. It just basically feels wrong to not pay for this app, it is that good.

I don't typically review or rate apps because I'm a terrible person, but I had to take the time to sit down and write something for this one. Chunky works beautifully even without the Pro upgrade, but I went and bought it anyways both to support the creator and unlock some cool extra options (I've seriously been messing with page tint for longer than is probably healthy.) Chunky has a lot of neat little features that go a long way in making the app as intuitive as it is. It automatically sorts your comics when you upload them and allows you to connect to a number of sources to download your files. Panning is smooth and page transitions are nearly seamless. Chunky does exactly as it advertises and does it very well, which is all I ever look for in an app. Clean both aesthetically and functionally; can't really think of complaints. I guess being able to display comics in list format would be useful, but that's probably more difficult to implement than a minor bug fix. Really happy with this app and my purchase, and would readily recommend to anyone looking for a simple and satisfying reading experience.

I've tried seemingly every reader in the app store. I had a Galaxy S4 for about six months and tried every reader in their store. Man, I even had a Surface Pro 2 for about a year and tried every reader app in THEIR store. Chunky is, hands down, the BEST app for reading comics I've ever used. Being able to add files from my OneDrive is top-notch. The app is fast, it has intuitive controls, and it looks fantastic. Plus, and this is VERY important to me, Michael gives some of the best support out there. I've had two very minor bugs, and he's been super quick to help me. In short, I could not recommend this app any more. If I could give it 50 stars, I would. Thanks for the great app, and keep up the good work, Michael.
