It’s rather weird, but Google Duo latest version is an app for communication that’s focused only on video and audio calls. There’s literally nothing more to do with it. On the other hand, the quality of calls is very high, so you may consider switching to this app from lagging apps like Viber. Group calls allow you to speak with up to 8 users simultaneously. All calls are encrypted so that no one could steal your private data.

Design – 5/5

Nothing extra – that’s about the Google Duo app. It has only the contact list and the settings menu. Everything you see next is video and buttons to switch on-off the mic, switch between cameras, and pause the video.

Usability – 4.5/5

Google Duo is focused only on video and audio calls. Developers used high-end low-latency algorithms and the broad network of servers worldwide to provide you with delay-free communication. Video and audio quality is really better than you may see in similar apps. For this Google Duo review, we compared Viber, WhatsApp, Facebook Messenger, and Telegram.

Streaming bitrate is nearly the same in each of these apps, but Google Duo presents fewer lags, freezes, and shorter overall delay time. All Google Duo calls are encrypted on servers, so you may be sure about your privacy.

Unlike other similar apps, Google Duo doesn’t allow you to exchange textual messages. You can send only video or audio messages between calls. If you don’t want other people to see your status, you can enable the Knock-knock feature. It allows you to see who’s calling and decline a call. It’s also a way to see video signal from the calling person.

Cross-platform use – 4.5/5

Google Duo is available only for Android 4.1+ and iOS 9.0+ devices. If you want to access your account on several devices, you have to be ready that your calls history won’t be synchronized between devices. You can’t get desktop clients for Windows and Mac OS, but there’s a web version that allows you to sign in with your phone number from any computer.

In-app purchases

You can install Google Duo and use all its features for free. You’re not required to pay any extra fees for international calls. You may be charged with additional fees only by your mobile operator, but data consumption of Google Duo is rather low, so it’s not likely to happen.

The Bottom Line

Google Duo is a good app if you don’t mind messaging and making calls in different apps. It provides you with brilliant image and audio quality and clear connection with 3G, 4G, LTE, and WiFi networks. It’s also a perfect app for users who lack privacy features.

Download Google Duo if you need a reliable app for making calls inside and outside the USA.
