HBO Now: Real Cable TV in Your Smartphone Now Review

All the authors that work on this project are required to follow our guidelines. To make the most out of the app testing process, our authors launch it on various smartphones and tablets with not only the latest OS', but also the previous ones.

HBO Now is an app that lets you watch HBO channel on your phone or tablet with no extra fee. Download HBO Now for iOS or Android, and enjoy the TV experience wherever you may go!

Functionality – 5/5
Read More

HBO Now lets you access all the content by HBO, including live TV streams and on-demand videos, including top titles like Game of Thrones, Chernobyl, Big Little Lies, Los Espookys, and other actual or classical series. It also delivers news, sports, talk shows, and other content for watching on-air or on-demand. The most pleasant thing is that using the app requires no extra payment.

Design – 5/5

The way the app looks is very HBO. With its dark background and white texts, large pictures, and visual interface elements, it reminds of the real TV experience. Anyway, what we really care about is content, not the interface. It’s like looking at the remote control instead of your TV screen; the controls shouldn’t distract you from the content. And this app is good at it.

Usability – 5/5

When you enter your credentials and confirm your subscription, you get access to the treasury HBO has for its viewers. Live news and sports, weather reports and comedy, talk shows and analytics are all here, with a guide included.

If you prefer TV shows and movies, there are lots of them. Unlike what free analogs offer, HBO Now has lots of A-class movies, real hits, and blockbusters. The subscription covers access to all of them, so you shouldn’t worry about some of them suddenly unavailable. You can bookmark movies, set them as favorites, switch between devices seamlessly.

The built-in player is basic, but it’s enough to control your playback. Play or pause your videos, select channels,
Like all streaming apps, HBO Now is very sensitive to your bandwidth and stable connection. But if it’s okay, the rest is okay too.

Cross-Platform Use – 4/5

The app is available for major mobile platforms – Android and iOS, and both apps are identical in both usability and pricing. You can also watch HBO on your TV with or without a TV box, or on your desktop with a browser. The only restriction is location-based: HBO is only available in the USA and some U.S. territories.

In-App Purchases

The only subscription plan HBO offers with HBO Now will cost you $14.99/mo, and it provides access to all the content. The quality is the highest that your device can handle or your bandwidth can deliver. This subscription also covers access from your TV. If you are already a subscriber, you just need to enter your login and password. New users can try HBO Now free for a month.

The Bottom Line

HBO deserves respect from all the TV fans all over the world, but is it worth your money, if you already use, say, Netflix? It depends on how high you rate the exclusive content (IMDB rates imply you love it). The app brings you the original HBO experience with all the exclusive productions, and, even though rare, they are worthy, just like its everyday aired content.

The HBO Now app is a great addition to your existing HBO subscription. It adds no strong reason to subscribe (Cherhobyl or Game of Thrones are stronger), but if you are hesitating, mobile access may affect the scale.

Pros : Rich content both by HBO and by partners;
Live streams and on-demand movies and series;
The highest quality your connection can provide;
Requires no extra fee, with one month for free.

Cons : Only available in the USA;
Highly dependable on your Internet connection.
