Sling TV Review

All the authors that work on this project are required to follow our guidelines. To make the most out of the app testing process, our authors launch it on various smartphones and tablets with not only the latest OS', but also the previous ones.

In XXI century watching TV doesn’t chain you down to a big box in the middle of your dining room. Television has become a service rather than a device. That’s why it makes sense to obtain your favorite subscription on your portable gadgets. Whenever you are, you only need a reliable Internet connection to watch your favorite shows.

Of course, every modern channel offers online broadcasting and special terms of subscription, but if you’re not stuck to some certain channels, you better select some integrated service, like Sling TV. This aggregator offers you whole packs of your favorite channels and services available from one place, a la carte. That’s the idea of the whole service: you only pay for what you want to watch and watch it anywhere on anything.

Functionality 4,5/5
Read More

After you sign in, the app displays the channels you have selected as you completed your subscription. All of them are available from the home screen, so you need to tap the icon of a channel to start watching.

The list of available channels includes sports, kids TV, shows, movies, news channels and many more options. The number of channels available via Sling TV is over 150 and adding. There are even special international broadcasting offers so that you can watch French, German, Arabic, Vietnamese and other channels in your native language. Latino channels are grouped in a special section with Mexican, South American, Spanish or Caribbean local TV.

It depends on the channel’s policy, but most channels offer both real-time streaming and watching shows on demand, so you can select the show and the episode you want to watch at any time. There are all of the options that regular video players offer, so you can rewind or fast forward the video, pause the playback and start it from any moment. The quality is selected automatically, depending on your screen resolution, but we never needed to adjust it manually, it always looked perfect.

If you use Sling on your TV console or smart TV, you can use your mobile device as a remote (as usual, they should be connected to the same network).

Design 4,5/5

The app seems to have no design at all, though, as we take the second glance, it turns out right. Nothing should distract you from your TV channel, so the designers did their best to fit in the most useful elements and nothing more. What you see is two scrollable lines of shortcuts and a menu sandwich in the left upper corner of the screen.

Scrolling the menus will get you to the channels you want. The upper one is for general purposes. It offers you the current programs, channels guides, and if you keep scrolling, you get to each channel you are subscribed to.
The lower row displays the shows by any particular channel. So select the channel in the upper row and the show in the lower: could it be simpler than that?

Usability 4/5

The app only contains the most necessary features. But they are made the most convenient way. As you select the channel, it takes a moment to connect to the broadcast. The same instant effect is seen when you pull the app out of the background. Of course, a poor Internet connection will spoil this.

If the channel offers you some of its shows on demand, you cannot watch them seamlessly. As the episode finishes, you have to pick the next one manually, and some users get annoyed with this. Some users also report frequent crashes interrupting the stream.

The list of countries you can sign up from is restricted. You can officially register only if your country is already covered by Sling TV services (by now, July 2017, it's only the USA, with some channels unavailable in certain states. So if you happen to live elsewhere, you’ll have to use US proxy to connect to Sling. Or ask your American friend to help you with creating an account. But as you are already signed up, you can sign in from anywhere.

Cross-platform use 5/5

The service has been designed for mobile usage from any device, so there is Sling TV for Android, iOS, Windows (desktop versions) and for virtually all Smart TV platforms (Apple TV, Chromecast, Android TV, Roku, LG Smart TV, Xbox One and more). Speaking about Android version we must mention that you should always have the latest one available, and for non-US residents updating through Google Play is unavailable, so you’ll have to download the installer from third-party services and install it manually.

Your Android version should be 4.4 or higher, but now the devices with older Android versions have become rare. And the hardware of compatible devices should be powerful enough to handle the real-time streaming.

In-app purchases

Watching TV is always paid – either you pay from your wallet, or you sacrifice your time watching endless ads. Sling TV doesn’t offer you that free torture; instead, you get two paying options. Sling Orange is the option including 20 channels of your choice, for $20/month. Adding $5/month gives you access to Sling Blue with 40 channels, available from the full list. The paying method is optional, but the easiest way is to do it via Google Play.

One of the best TV subscription services for mobile devices is worth your attention because of its high personalization. The prices seem moderate if you really need so many channels, but if you prefer to stick to one or two favorites, it may look too expensive. A greater problem is about issues some users face while using the app, but often we can blame it on poor Internet connection.

A great service offering great a variety of channels for relatively small money, but not always working as expected.

Pros : Affordable subscription price
A lot of channels available
Multiple devices supported within one subscription
Easy interface with nowhere to get lost

Cons : Connection issues (though it depends on Internet connection);
Unstable working;
Poor compatibility with old devices;
Problems with installation and subscription if you’re outside the USA.
