Xbox Beta Review

All the authors that work on this project are required to follow our guidelines. To make the most out of the app testing process, our authors launch it on various smartphones and tablets with not only the latest OS', but also the previous ones.

Xbox One Smartglass beta is a public version of Xbox app that has testing drafts of new capabilities and some small changes in the interface. The developers launched this version to get feedbacks from users and improve the app even more. Therefore, the Xbox beta receives updates once a while. Also, this application can be installed and uninstalled as a stable version.

Xbox One Smartglass beta isn’t the latest update for this app, but it has already lots of handy features. With the last update, there is an option to view, save and share Xbox One screenshots appeared. To look through these screenshots later you can go to your activity feed or the profile pages. As developers state, this feature was added because of the users’ feedback and this demonstrates how the feedback are important for Microsoft and help the dev team improve the app’s service.

The Xbox beta app shows you recommended games, achievements, your friends’ favorite games as well as gives you the feature for instant messaging. After you have downloaded the app and open it for the first time, it offers you to create an Xbox Live account for a local user or will create it automatically based on your Microsoft Account, if it exists of course. The Xbox app lets you change the username and avatar, make your real name visible or hidden, create a bio and much more.

Design 4.5/5

The Xbox beta app has a new user interface that looks a little bit different from the previous one, and it got a few interesting elements into the concept. The developers tried to make it look like an Android app and not just like a tiny Xbox window.

The app’s interface looks nice and straightforward. Its design is beautiful with the black color as a primary one and some added red elements. Also, the interface should be understandable to all users because it was simplified a lot. After you log into your account, you will see a news feed where you can like, comment on or share other users’ posts. You will also see an icon with the settings at the top left corner and three more icons at the top right side for friends search, instant messaging and feedbacks.

If you tap on the "Friends" icon, you will see a tab with the search line at the top, online and offline friends and recommendations as well. When you choose any game that you like you can tap on it and open a window with the game’s image and a small panel above it. From now, you can easily do a horizontal scrolling between the main game’s tabs: see the game’s information, its news feed, see who else plays this game, check achievements and some game’s videos. There is also a slide-out menu from the left with lots of icons available for the Tab version.

However, there is one defect in the app’s design. It’s is locked to portrait mode on tablets. That might be inconvenient for somebody who is used to browse everything through the various management options without interrupting an Xbox game.

Usability 4/5

The Xbox beta app is an interesting app for those gamers who likes to try out new unpublished games or applications because you can try it one of the first and leave your feedback for the developers. They might even listen to your remark or an idea and improve it in the future.

The biggest changes that the Xbox beta app has it’s the settings menu because from now users can share their achievements there as well as post them directly to Facebook accounts from the app. Also, the developers have added an update to the SmartGlass beta version that allows you to turn on and off your Xbox One console from the Android device so that you will be able to start streaming content directly to your tablet without using a separate controller.

Cross-platform use 3.5/5

The Xbox beta app is available only for devices that run Android or Windows platform. Unfortunately, the iOS Beta app is open only to users who are part of the beta testing program. So if you’re an Android or Windows Phone owner, then you can simply download the SmartGlass beta app and try it by yourself.

In-app purchases

The Xbox beta app is free and doesn’t have any in-app purchases to offer because it was created to test the unpublished version of the Xbox app and get the real users’ feedbacks.

The Xbox beta app is a pre-released version of the regular Xbox app, and it might work not as accurately as it should. It can also differ from the final version as the developers said. However, the app has all new features and capabilities as well as an updated interface that will likely surprise you.

So if you're looking to try out a new version of the Xbox app and even become one of the first who downloads it, then go to the play market, check it out and leave your feedback for the developers. They might even listen to your remark or an idea and improve it in the future.
