It’s essential to keep fit to stay healthy and live a long, happy life. However, not all of us really do manage to get out of the comfort zone and start working out. Are you one of those people who wish they could take up a sport, start jogging, do some aerobics or even simply go for long walks in the evenings? If so, it is time to get up and get going (maybe even running) towards your fitness goals. Let’s see if the Garmin Connect app can help you on your way to health and fitness.
So what exactly does Garmin Connect do? In a nutshell, it is an app that allows you to establish a connection between a number of Garmin fitness accessories (both devices and wearables) and read the data from them on your phone or tablet. However, it’s got some more tricks up its sleeve than just showing your fitness goals and statistics, so let’s take a closer look.
Once you download and install the Garmin Connect app, you are only a few steps away from enjoying all of its features. When you open the app for the first time, it prompts you to sign in using your existing user data or register for a new account. It is highly likely that as a Garmin device user, you already have an account, but if you don't, you can create it straight from the app. Alternatively, you can use one of your social networks accounts like Facebook to quickly add the essential data to your Garmin account. Also, you can view the whole list of supported Garmin devices, and even check the functionality range of each and every one of them. This is a rather nice addition to the app’s functionality and good thinking on the developer’s part.
Once you’re done with the sign-in part, the app will ask you whether you have a device to connect. If you aren't in possession of a Garmin fitness tracker yet, no worries - you can still use the Garmin Connect mobile app, just choose the “go to app” option. Next, you’ll have to make up your mind as to why exactly you’re going to be using the app. You can choose from the following options: “Health,” “Fitness” and “Golf.” Based on your choice, Garmin Connect will add the most relevant widgets to your home screen, which you can also change later.
Once you’re done with the setup, you can start working with the app itself. The Garmin Connect mobile app has a lot of screens for you to explore and use, starting with a number of tabs that show information about your daily sports activities, such as walking, running, swimming or cycling. The initial tab combination depends on your choice during the app setup and can be changed at any time. There is also a built-in Garmin Connect app calendar to help you keep track of your activities in a more efficient way. With this app calendar, you can check out summaries of your physical activity for every single day, filter the calendar data based on activity type and see your notifications containing tips or information about new app features.
Working out, jogging, swimming, cycling, and walking can be fun all by themselves, but why not add the social component into the mix? With Garmin Connect, you can easily share your success with the world, and even invite your friends to join you. What’s more, there is an in-app news feed, which allows you to see what your friends are up to. When you choose to share one of your achievements, it will appear in your friends’ news feeds, too. You can also start and join competitions to keep you challenged and motivated. For instance, if you join a walking challenge, the app will put you in a group of people who walk approximately the same number of steps as you do, and the user who has the most steps by the end of the competition wins.
Finally, you can also create custom workouts, courses, and activities. To do that, you’ll have to log into your Garmin account from a computer. Every change you make to your account can be synchronized to the Garmin Connect apps on your phone or tablet, as well as any compatible Garmin devices. Also, you can add some personal information here, such as your height and weight. Garmin Connect also has a lot of settings, which means that you can tweak the app’s performance, privacy settings, and your profile data to suit your preferences.
Garmin Connect features a bright, sleek design which is perfect for reminding you that this is an app for tracking your sports activity and promoting concentration and determination. The user-friendly interface is easy to navigate and won’t make you waste the precious time for your workout to wade through the app’s countless functions.
Here’s the catch: all of Garmin Connect functionality can only be fully experienced if you happen to be in possession of one of the Garmin devices, be it a wearable or a portable one. Otherwise, it can read data from some other apps installed on your iPhone or Android phone, but your user experience will be far from complete. This makes sense, seeing as Garmin Connect is basically a companion app for Garmin fitness trackers, but it still would’ve been nice to see more inter-app compatibility, especially now that both Android and iOS have powerful built-in health monitoring apps.

Garmin Connect is a truly universal app, as you can install it both on your iOS and Android mobile devices. What’s more, you can also experience Garin Connect on your Mac. Given that you can also use the service straight from your browser, it is safe to say that Garmin Connect is available everywhere and at any time.
