Sweatcoin Pays You To Get Fit: Mining with Your Own Body Review
Sweatcoin is a new startup that motivates you to move more by paying you for physical activity. The sweatcoins you receive can be spent on real purchases. Download Sweatcoin for iOS and Android and earn by your steps!
The idea of the app is simple. You install it, it tracks your activity and rewards you with sweatcoins. These virtual coins can later be converted and spent on apps and content, material items, or charity. The app only counts your outdoor steps, so, if you get addicted, you are meant to spend much time outside.
It’s made in a retrofuturistic fashion, like a computer talking to a human user in 1980s’ movies. Fonts and backgrounds in the intro, as you enter your data, remind you of the good old sci-fi. After the initial setup, it looks like a radar showing the location around you schematically, with all the key data (steps number and the sum earned) above.
As you start the app, it tries to connect to your wearable device connected to your phone – a smartwatch or a fitness tracker. If you don’t use one, the app will attempt to access a built-in pedometer. And if your phone lacks it as well, it will do the final trick and require access to your Google Fit or Apple Health account and fetch data from it.
During the day it tracks your activity by any method it can access. It only counts your outdoor activity; no matter how many steps you make in your room, that doesn’t count. So it will require access to your GPS data. The app is also social; you can create your friendlist, based on your contact book, or just share the app with system tools. You also get bonuses for watching ads (1 sweatcoin) or inviting friends (5 sweatcoins).
But how much can one earn with it? Well, one sweatcoin you get for 1,000 steps is about $0.05, so even if you are active, you can get about a buck a day. Not enough to make you rich, but okay to get you some paid apps or content once or twice a week. As an option, you may contribute to charity projects.
Cross-Platform Use 4/5
The app is available for iOS and Android, but it requires a wearable device with some phones that don’t have an onboard pedometer. You better have at least a fitness tracker bracelet with a pedometer. A smartwatch is a better companion, though, because of better integration.
The app is not made to take your money, though it offers some purchases. For example, you can (as for November 2019) get the last year's iPhone XS or $1000 in cash for 20000 sweatcoins, or have a 5-day trip to Disneyland for 15,549. These are ones taken to the extreme, but there are more realistic propositions; for example, apps or audiobooks that are usually paid but can be purchased for sweatcoins. Well, it also lets you spend your sweat for charity by transferring your coins to special foundations.
The Bottom Line
It’s at least a very attractive idea that motivates us to move more for serious rewards.Collapse
