One of the best media players for Windows and OS X, KMPlayer has made its way to Android. Well, we know that the platforms are so different that the same name may be in fact a homonym. But there is a little thing called “reputation”, and, even if the functionality may differ, the way it’s made will be just as correct.
The original KMPlayer has been famous for its support for multiple audio and video formats, for its incredible playback options… and, alas, for ad support resulting in ads popping up whenever and wherever it’s possible. Anyway, most Android users have got used to this way of monetizing, or they just know how to pay it off. So if the pros of KMPlayer are still here, its cons don’t matter that much.

Functionality: 5

Just as it’s been expected, this player can almost virtually anything. At least, anything that can be found in your memory. It works with a large list of media file formats, including the most common ones as well as exotic (we won’t relist them as the list can be found on the official page, but whatever format you choose, it’s probably supported).

The player doesn’t require the latest hardware as well as latest Android versions. It’s been promised to work under Android 4.0.3 or fresher.

Design: 4.5

The best design for video player is no design at all – at least unless you need to control it. So the developers made the most demanded features invisible, available through gestures. As you tap on the screen while the video is playing, a small control panel appears. The elements are spread close to the screen edge and don’t distract you much from watching, and they contain a button for anything you need: add another video to your playlist, lock the playback, set it on repeat, mirror the video you’re playing now, activate/deactivate subtitles, adjust playback speed or open the video in a floating window.
Windowed mode can also be seen as a “design” feature. Yes, you can play your videos in a floating window while sending a letter or reading an IMDB article about that actor from the movie you’re watching right now. And it’s a serious advantage, especially if you’re a power user with high distraction level.
A good work has been done over the gallery. You can view all your videos in one list or sort it by folders, and it makes finding the video you need easier.

Usability: 3.5

It all runs smoothly as the formats are familiar. The playback of Full HD and even 2K videos is smooth, and 4K videos were mostly played smoothly even on our test device by 2013, with Android 4.4, Snapdragon 600, 2 GB RAM and Full HD screen resolution.
The controls were just as fun. It only takes a swipe left or right to navigate within the video. Swiping up and down in the left part of the screen adjusts the brightness, and in the right part it controls volume. You don’t have to summon the menu for most common operations, but if you need, it takes just one tap anywhere on the screen.
As you install KMPlayer, it scans your memory and detects video files, so at first launch you already have a prepared library.

Unfortunately, some codecs can be a stumbling block for KMPlayer. We’d tolerate it if it only suggested that we download and install codecs manually (it’s already a buzzkill, but for one time we’d forgive that). The problem is that there’s no codec where the player sends us. There are some lines in Chinese, English and your default language, if it’s different from these two, but there’s no link to downloading this codec.
OK, it’s commercial, we got it. OK, we’re willing to pay once and never encounter this again. But hell no, we can’t! Even for money! Even by searching manually in Google Play! Well, there were some links in the page opened in KM after detecting the unsupported format, but it wasn’t easy to find a working codec. The only one we found was stored on Google Drive and couldn’t be downloaded before its owner gave us permission, and we couldn’t wait for that.

Some good news: as the video library is scanned, the problem files get marked with a triangle warning sign, so you may delete them without even trying to open or convert by some third-party app. This may be the way.

Cross-platform use

As KMPlayer exists at least for Windows and OS X, it wouldn't be wise to make any advantages out of it. So your PC version of KMPlayer can work as a media server, and an Android instance can play videos through it. Setting up this access is easy: it’s enough to tap the cloud icon in the upper right corner and go to “KMP Connect” tab. The pin number you need to enter can be found in the desktop version of KMPlayer.

In-app purchases

Unfortunately, none. No typos; we’d like to purchase the codec pack, since the missing codecs are commercial, and enjoy this swift and ergonomic player with all its might. But no, we get some useless instructions instead. By Turing, we wouldn’t even mind ads if they helped with that! But the sentence is “no”.

This player could have been great. In some ways, it’s even better than the standard for Android MX Player (at least, KM has a better file manager and video gallery, and – as for us – its playback is a bit smoother). But still there are some issues, and the alpha of them is its inability to add codecs directly from within.

You may adore this player, quick, easy and multifunctional until you run into some video it’s not equipped to play, and we wish it never happens to you.

Pros : Easy interface and standard commands
Playback speed can be adjusted
Floating window mode
Access to your desktop library through PC version
Translated into many languages

Cons : Some codecs are not supported, and you can’t download them from within the app even for money
Ads. Are they that necessary for a video player?
