It’s a hard mission to invent a more generic name. The app with such a name seems sentenced to eternal oblivion under tons of other players. But the developers know how to make good player apps. So the app is at least worth reviewing.

Functionality 9/10

This MP3 player app seems to have all Google Play music lacks. When you launch it, the app scans all your memory to detect folders with audio files. So when the app starts, its home screen shows you playing options: all music, sorted by track name by default; artist, album. The icons row below seems more useful: it includes Favorites (the list is easy to form), Recent play list (saved automatically) and Folders list.

Unfortunately, you cannot exclude a folder from the list to display, so you’ll have to deal with any folder that has a sound file inside. But if you want to find a track quickly, just use a search icon in the right upper corner.

When you start playing tracks, a mini player is displayed in the bottom of the screen. A tap on it unfolds the player into the fullscreen view, with the track and the artist on top, the disc cover in the middle and controls in the bottom. Right here you can set the playback mode (regular, repeat, random), mark the track as Favorite, share the track via any supporting app, access the 5-band equalizer and the playlist.

By the way, the equalizer works great. You can use five bands, bass booster, digitizer and a digital preamp if you need more volume. There is even a reverb selection; while listening to the music in your headphones you may make it sound like you’re in a room of selected size.

Editing functions are just formal. You can edit track information (artist, album, name), but when it comes to editing playlists, you’ll find that you can’t rearrange tracks you have already added.

You can rescan your memory from the settings if the app hasn’t fetched the updates itself. Settings also allow access to playback mode, waiting mode and headset controls.

If you are a lucky owner of Android Wear device, you can control the playback from your smartwatch. The control set is defined by OS functionality: you can start or pause playback, jump to the next or the previous track, and adjust the volume.

Design 9/10

This player is a little disco’ish so it works best with lightminded disco, funk, EDM and other entertainment genres. The dark background with neon symbols works great, especially when you're in the dark. The icons are easy to touch without mistaps or pixel-hunting, and the text is easily readable. There are no changeable skins, but it's not that much of a problem.

The main playing window displays the release cover as a rotating disc in the middle of the screen. It won’t show, though, if the file has no embedded cover. It looks strange: why can the app load the ads, but cannot load the covers?

The interface is translated into most popular languages thoroughly. Don’t judge its quality by automatic translations on the app’s page in Google Play. The translation of app itself is quite decent, though Spanish, Russian or French descriptions are impossible to read for native speakers.

There’s a tactile pleasure from playlists, as they are displayed in a special row, easy to view and access. The tracks are easy to add from the general playlist.

The app doesn’t support landscape mode, so tablet users will be a bit disappointed.

Usability 8/10

It would be 10 out of 10 if not for ads. They appear when you never expect them, and the worst is that the pop-up ads have sound interfering with the music you’re listening to. And besides that, there are banners in the bottom of the screen and a seductive notification icon in the right upper corner (and yes, it’s also an ad). There’s no way to neutralize them, even purchasing a Pro version is not available.

Another thing it lacks is searching song lyrics online as well as release covers. Instead, it suggests you put the lyrics file with the same name into the same directory. Tell me with your right hand on the Dark Side of the Moon (or Straight Outta Compton, if you wish): are you ready to do all that work to get rid of the insolent reminder in the middle of the screen?

In all the other ways the player works great. It depends on your acoustics and the DAC of your phone whether you’ll be able to tell FLAC or APE from MP3 at 320 kbps, but the app does its best to play all of these formats with most quality possible.

The playback automatically stops when you change the output, no matter if it’s a built-in speaker, a 3.5-earphones or Bluetooth acoustics. You can adjust its behavior in Settings.

Cross-platform use 5/10

This is a solely Android player; even the developer’s name – MiniAndroid – gives us no hope to ever see this app available for iOS or other platforms. The good news is that the app will work even on old Android 4.0 devices. And if we keep in mind that there are custom ICS ROMs even for most earlier devices, then this player covers most Android phones and tablets.

In-app purchases

None. The app is ad-supported and so uncontestedly free. And, in fact, it’s no good news. Many users are ready to pay a bit to have a mobile music player rid of annoying ads spoiling the experience. The comments on Google Play page are filled with these regrets.

Forgive us, Father; we even tried to find this music player app pirate mod with no ads, and we didn’t succeed. The temptation is too strong; the player would be almost perfect without these ads, and even its inability to fetch lyrics and covers online wouldn’t poison the pleasure.

The Bottom Line

This player is way better than the default Android one. But, in fact, almost any paid mobile player can do the same. So the only reason to select this one is if you really like it. And there are things to like4 first of all neon-style dark design, good equalizer and easy controls. The rest is a question of taste.

Conclusion

Conclusion Well, this player is worth trying, if you like to download music player for free; and if you’re ready to put up with ad-based inconveniences, this player will greatly improve your listening experience compared to the default one on your device.
