Several years ago the app was very unstable and crashed regularly. That has been fixed to the point I cannot remember a crash in over a year. I now read the app and only read the paper on the weekend. That said, the placement and use of ads is thoroughly annoying. Often it is the same ad over and over again throughout the app. How can that possibly be anything other than annoying to anyone?? Also, it is far to easy to accidentally press an ad and be taken elsewhere. Ironically, the ads in the WSJ paper are among my favorite and one of the reasons I read the paper on the weekend. I just wish they could be half as effective in the app...

This is about the WSJ app, not the otherwise great content. What happened to the WSJ app? In the most recent update it starts to show whole screen takeover ad. Why would WSJ interrupt their paying users so much? In addition to whole page takeover ads, the app often crashes on he saved articles tab. The response time from opening up a saved article is so long that I almost give up on saving articles for later anymore. If I cannot open up a saved article, what’s the point of saving an article for later?

Update Nov 17: They’ve greatly improved the look and operation of the app. Much easier to use and navigate. Previous review: App takes overly long to update and move between editions and stories. Also, the visual design is bland. Seems bound to the design limitations of a print edition and does not take advantage of the visual possibilities provided by smart phones and tablets
