Google Photos Review
Google Photos is an incredibly useful service for pictures and videos storing that can back up your library automatically and provide access to it on any device. Right after the release Google Photos became popular pretty fast and had more than 200 million active users per month in just one year. No wonder why. It’s not only convenient to use, but it also has a lot of exciting features like making GIFs from photos or creating “stories” from particular events.
Google Photos is a perfect app to make some free space on your mobile devices because you can use it for storing media from your library even for free. Moreover, this app allows you not only storing the content, but it also has a lot of other useful functions like editing, sharing, creating stories and way more.
There is a search tool available which is pretty impressive because you can search for colors and other details with it. You can also browse pictures by categories that Google has created based on your library. It also recognizes faces on all your pictures and makes separate groups for each person detected on the photos.
With Google Photos you can share your content with other people easily. Just select the desired images or albums that you want to share and the app will generate a link that you can send to others or post on social media. To open that link other people don't even need to be signed up for Google Account or download Google Photos. In case you want to share a big amount of images you can tap one photo and drag your finger through other pictures that you need.
Google Photos knows how to make nice looking stories from your library. It finds any events that you've pictured with your phone and combines pictures from this event together to make it look like an organized photo gallery and a good memory for your future. It can group photos by your photos' geotags as well and pick out the best images.
You can create collages, GIFs, and panoramas right in Google Photos, save them as new or switch with a previous version of a photo. In case you have from 2 to 20 similar pictures, you can create an animated GIF that puts all of the images together into a moving one. You might want to create a movie, which you can also do in this app. It will look like a slideshow video with some music in the background.
Google Photo’s Collages lets you combine several photos into one, but doesn’t give you an opportunity to control the photo’s design or move it around. In the Google Photos app, you will be able to adjust such features as brightness, lighting, color, vignettes, add some filters, crop and use the auto filtering to improve the picture’s look in one step.
Google Photos has a beautifully looking design and easily understandable interface. It uses pinch gestures to simplify a navigation and reduce the seemingly endless amount of scrolling through a library. Opening the app, you will see images that are located chronologically by day, but if you pinch to zoom, you’ll see how photos grouped by month and year. The selection and zoom gestures feel fluid, allowing you to move through the app efficiently.
You can see the app's menu that slides out from the left side. There you can find collections and an assistant, category with deleted photos, shared links that are saved and other settings.
Google Photos is considered as a useful app just because it gives you lots of storage for keeping your content. But options for saving it are also different. So you can keep your photos in a high-quality or an original resolution.
Google Photos gives you the high-quality option for free. Moreover, you are going to have unlimited storage, but your photos must be less than 16 megapixels as well as videos that must be 1080p resolution or lower.
If you want to upload something larger than 16 megapixels or 1080p, the app can compress them for you to the required size or lower to save space. You get 15GB of free storage when you’re registering a Google account and share those 15GB on all services that you might use like Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos.
In case you purchase an additional storage from Google you’ll be allowed to keep all your content at their full resolutions as they were recorded but in your storage limits. The price for this storage starts from $2 per month for 100GB.
You’re lucky if you use a Google Pixel phone because in that case, you'll have unlimited storage for original quality images and videos.
Google Photos also has an automatic backup feature that can save each photo or video that you capture right after you take it. Additionally, there is a feature that lets you choose what to upload to the service if you’re using it at the first time. This can be helpful because sometimes you don’t want some Instagram or saved from the Internet photos to be imported. You can also pick when to upload images: while using your data plan, or only when you have a Wi-Fi connection.
Google Photos has one sufficient advantage among other similar apps because it has a good working Assistant that helps you organize your photos better than anything else. This Google Assistant looks like a dashboard with separate blocks of useful information. With this panel you can check on the progress of your photo backups anytime or see the photo editing processes that the app creates for you.
Cross-platform use 5/5
Google Photo can be named a cross-platform app easily because it’s available almost for any device that runs any software. It also has a nice web application, so you can access your saved content anytime even without having a mobile device. Moreover, if you download the automatic backup, all the content will appear on all your devices simultaneously.
Google Photos gives you a free 15GB of storage for all services like Gmail, Google Drive and Google Photos and lets you keep unlimited photos less than 16 megapixels as well as videos that are 1080p resolution or lower. You can always purchase an additional storage if you feel like you need more or want to save images in a full resolution.
Google Photos is an impressively useful app with a powerful image search, lots of functions and limitless storage available for free. It's simple to use, powerful enough to surprise you with its features and ads and has a nice looking design that is pleasant to work with. However, it lacks options for storing uncompressed images.Collapse
