Penultimate Review

The best digital handwriting on iPad. Penultimate combines distraction-free, natural handwriting and sketching with the power of Evernote’s sync and search. Take class or meeting notes, journal your thoughts, or outline your next big idea—in the office or on the go. From the first stroke, Penultimate makes the experience of pen and paper more productive.

Notes and drawings look spectacular in black or colored ink. Our inking technology produces pen strokes that look natural, and Wrist Protection prevents stray marks for writers of all grips. Choose from a number of paper styles, or import an image to create personalized paper.

We worked closely with Adonit to create the stylus we've always wanted: the Jot Script Evernote Edition, the first true precision-point stylus. Penultimate integrates tightly with the stylus and together they make digital handwriting the experience it should be. It’s like writing with your favorite pen. Available now in the Evernote Market.

Penultimate lets you work on any part of the page effortlessly. To zoom in on a location on the page, simply pinch in and start writing. With Penultimate's Drift feature enabled, the page will move along with you, automatically adjusting to the pace you are working at.

Sign in to your Evernote account in the Penultimate app to organize your Penultimate notes in notebooks, separated by topic, project, or category. Your Penultimate notes are synced to Evernote automatically, so you can find and share them across all of your devices.

No matter how you prefer to organize your work, Penultimate makes it easy to find the notes you need. Penultimate processes your notes so you can search for handwritten text in the app. Save and browse your work in notebooks and insert, delete, duplicate, and reorganize pages any way you like within them.

Penultimate is free to download and use. Pair it with Evernote Premium or Evernote Plus for bigger uploads and many other great features.

Two subscription options:
Evernote Premium monthly for $7.99 per month | $69.99 annually
Evernote Plus monthly for $3.99 per month | $34.99 annually

First, I should explain what I'm using the app for and how. I use the app to take notes during meetings, write out my project plans, and to sketch wireframes. I prefer to write notes by hand with the Apple Pencil. I've been on the hunt for the perfect note-taking app, one that is intuitive, easy to edit and make changes, and one that allows me to customize the pen settings. I also look for the line-style that looks artistic, usually achieved by slightly changing the thickness of the line depending on how much pressure I use. I have tried a lot of paid and unpaid note-taking apps trying to find the perfect one. Some excel at customizing pen settings, some excel at the "feel" of writing, others excel at editing and moving things around. But usually they have one or two things that end up being too much of a distraction to keep using. So far, Penultimate is in the lead. If the app continues to be developed and improved upon, I would gladly pay to upgrade. I'm hoping Penultimate does care about user experience and seeks feedback to help direct their improvements, which is why I've taken the time to write about bugs I've found and improvements I'd like to see. The most interruptive bug would be when you open a Note and the pages are entirely missing. To fix it, I have to go back to the notebook, find the specific note again and reopen it. Another frustrating bug happens when I'm scrolling through the pages of a note then when I start writing the page jumps to the top of the page I was editing. It seems like the app doesn't like where the page is sitting so it needs to adjust to a locked-and-ready-for-writing position. It's especially frustrating when I'm writing notes in a meeting because it distracts me away from my thought in order to find my place again and by that point (even if it only takes 2 seconds) there is something else that I need to note. As for UX improvements, I would love the ability to rename a note while actually inside the note itself. This could be accomplished by either adding a title field at the top of the notes or by including it in the page tray settings. Another feature I'd love to see added is a ruler tool. Like the one found in the native Apple Notes app. Since discovering the ruler tool, I've actually found myself using the native Notes app more often because of the usefulness of that feature. The last UX improvement would be making the writing tools faster to modify. I like to use different degrees of boldness to differentiate between headers, paragraphs, and key words. The two taps required to change between 01 and 05 thickness is one tap too many. The time it takes to switch to a stronger bold (and heaven forbid I want to change the color too) is enough time to make me fall behind in a meeting and I end up scrambling to try and get everything noted. I fall further and further behind each time I need to change the size or color of the pen.

I have downloaded a lot of note taking apps to see which ones I like best and I always go back to this one. As a designer the different papers allow me to space plan, attach a picture and sketch all at the same time. I have recommended this app to lots of creative friends. I deleted penultimate after I lost all my notebooks when Evernote changed everything about this app. I was incredibly disappointed to loose an app that I went to all the time. Nothing compared. Then I read that after many people complained Evernote brought back a lot of the old features of penultimate and it's back on my iPad! Thank god!! Thank you for bringing back the note books. After trying to find a replacement I would like to suggest a feature. Instead of having to to up and down to switch from eraser to writing tool, When you use the eraser I would like to see it automatically switch back to the selected pen or writing tool once you lift your stylist off the surface. It makes for a smoother more natural progression.
