Along with just the input of symbols, Gboard is equipped with its own Google search. With it, the keyboard is, for example, capable of searching for the right GIFs and stickers to make your chats more colorful. It also lets you do the searching from any app that allows for a keyboard at all.
Design 5/5
Google takes the best features ever available in keyboard design and puts them all in one place. The keyboard is customizable, though under iOS its customization is limited by OS restrictions. In its default design, though, it still looks great, and all the extra tools are easily accessible.
Usability 5/5
Along with traditional tapping the letters to form words, you can try Glide. Glide Typing is the Google’s version of Swype. Don’t lift your finger; draw it from letter to letter, and the keyboard will recognize what you mean and offer its suggestions. The response is quick and correct, regardless of the platform, though on old devices its updated version may work with some delay.
While the swipe feature is offered by many keyboards, integrated Google services are exclusive for Gboard. You can search with Google engine and insert the results into your postings or notes. Google Translate lets you easily post in other languages. Emoji and GIF search will help you find the right picture to illustrate or highlight your message. There is voice input, of course. The most unusual tool is a GIF maker that uses your camera to capture the moment, and it’s as powerful as most standalone apps for that. In addition, there are shortcuts for most frequent actions.
Cross-platform use 5/5
It’s one of those Google products that, having been always present on Android, now has made its way to iOS. The experience on both platforms is about similar. Google services work under iOS as greatly as under Android (and no wonder, as they are web-based).
In-app purchases
The app is free (like most Google services), and it has no paid options at all. On the other hand, it is monetized somehow. Probably Google uses the data you provide for its analytic researches and better ad targeting. But the result is the same: you have a great keyboard with Google services for free.
The Bottom Line
Gboard is one of the most advanced keyboards nowadays. Among all the variety of Android keyboard apps, it’s worth your attention. On iOS it’s one of the few alternatives to the default keyboard, and it’s the reason to try it too.
