NOAA Now Review

0

NOAA Now provides the latest information from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration including: hurricanes and tropical storms in the Atlantic, Pacific and Indian oceans; mainland storms, including the latest tornado and severe thunderstorm alerts; worldwide animated satellite views; the latest marine conditions from the National Data Buoy Center; the ultraviolet index. All data is courtesy of NOAA, NASA and other sources where indicated. Continued use of GPS running in the background can dramatically decrease battery life.

After installing the latest version, the OS prompted me to allow the app to constantly monitor my location, explaining the app "may share this information with our trusted partners." Share the info with whom? How long do you keep it? How do you protect it? With what data do you aggregate it? I don't know how long this had been going on, but it's an unacceptable breach of my trust, so I turned it off. Since this app provides only wide-area information, anyway, it doesn't really need location data. If you value your privacy (or just object to people selling your information), I recommend you do the same. (Your battery will last longer, too!)

It's a great informative and scientifically oriented medium of delivering weather updates. Only quirk would be each time you leave the app it closes what you were last reading and you have to go back and find it. Possibly adding a little notification pop up on the side saying how many new posts have been added since the post you began reading.

This app is great if you're looking for quick status updates about tropical systems or weather watches - which I was. This is not the right app if you're looking for detailed, local forecasts, or lots of graphics, or radar. They continue to add good new features. But the pop up ads are annoying.
