Jurassic Craft Review: Dino Masonry Secrets Kept Hidden

Jurassic Craft brings the popular Minecraft mod, Jurassic Craft, to mobile devices as an unofficial third-party game. The game is almost identical to Minecraft and features the classic 3D pixelated blocky graphics which fans love.

It places the player in a hostile world filled with dinosaurs where the player must survive for as long as possible; the ultimate aim of the game is to thrive in the world by constructing a base and taming dinosaurs.

Graphics 6/10

The graphics in Jurassic Craft use the smooth, pixelated blocks seen in Minecraft and other similar games; the added dinosaurs and other animals are detailed and suit the world nicely. Players who are looking for a perfect Minecraft graphics clone will be disappointed, the textures are slightly different enough to stand out when compared to the classic Minecraft graphics.Almost all blocks in the game are breakable and can be collected by the player to be placed down elsewhere; crafting is a major point of the game and to progress through it, the player needs to craft items. Crafting is done through the inventory and requires a specific amount of items which are displayed on the screen.Besides from crafting and building, the player must also pay very close attention to their Health and Hunger bars if they wish to survive; if the Hunger bar depletes then the player will begin to lose Health, the only way to replenish the Hunger bar is to eat food. Health can be regenerated over time if the Hunger bar is filled. Finding food is relatively simple; the player can plant crops to grow and craft edible food or they could kill animals for their meat. Meat needs to be cooked to maximize its effects but most can be eaten raw.

Gameplay 7/10

Jurassic Craft is based on a popular dinosaur mod for Minecraft; it's one of the many Minecraft clones currently available for mobile devices. Unlike most other Minecraft clones, this game is based on the Jurassic Craft mod which adds some new features to the classic gameplay such as the ability to tame the dinosaurs which populate the world.It was published on mobile devices by Hypercraft Sarl who have released several modded versions of Minecraft for mobile devices.At the start of the game, the player can decide what kind of world they want to spawn into; the world can be customized and the player can select which environment they want the world to be. In addition to this, players can select how big they want the world to be, what world type and also what they want to be in that world.Like with other open world sandbox games, the aim of the game is to survive for as long as possible in the hostile environment; this is mostly done by exploring, engaging in combat and building a base. Building is one of the biggest aspects of the game, to do this the player needs to collect resources first by breaking blocks and constructing tools.There are two types of game modes to select from; Survival and Creative. Playing in a Creative world removes the Hunger and Health bars, it effectively makes the player immortal which is perfect for exploration and building. A Survival world allows the player to be attacked and dying causes the world be to be deleted. Saving and loading worlds is possible and there are several save slots available.

Controls 4/10

As to be expected from a Minecraft clone, there is no tutorial in the game. While Minecraft players will instantly know the basics of the game, new players will be very confused about the mechanics and controls of the game.Before the world loads completely, there are some very basic instructions shown on the screen to explain how to place and break blocks. This is useful for Minecraft savvy individuals but would make no sense to other players.The game controls are clearly on the screen and are simple to understand; it uses a directional movement pad similar to Minecraft Pocket Edition and the default settings cause the player to automatically jump up block levels.While the player can use the default settings, it's possible to modify the controls so that the player can tap the jump button to manually jump. The camera controls are very awkward however, it involves moving the camera around manually, however, this also causes the character to place a block or start trying to break a block.

Replay Value 8/10

New players might miss the combat mechanics at first but they are certainly there; the combat system is very limited and the player needs to tap the sword icon on the right side of the screen. To attack, the player needs to be facing their target before pressing the button to keep dealing damage.When dealing with combat it's better to attack with a tool or a weapon; attacking with a fist or another item will deal damage but it will be minimal. To deal higher damage, the player needs to use a weapon which first needs to be crafted.The dinosaurs are a nice gimmick in the game however it doesn't add much in terms of survival; all dinosaurs are neutral towards the player unless they are attacked and they don't interact very much. The game world is filled with some of the most popular dinosaurs in existence such as the Triceratops and Tyrannosaurus Rex.It's possible to tame the various types of dinosaurs that wander the game world; this is done by feeding them the right types of food in accordance to their species. The mechanic is similar to taming Wolves in Minecraft however in this game, Wolves are very aggressively and will immediately attack the player.Jurassic Craft features a cash shop where players can purchase in-game currency which is used to buy items such as weapons and armor at the start of each world; it provides players with a clear advantage however the game also gives players low amounts of currency for logging in daily.

In-app purchases

Verdict

Jurassic Craft is a nice Minecraft clone but it doesn't really do enough to stand out from other clones; it adds dinosaurs to the game and some more content relating to them but it doesn't expand on the concepts enough to make it more interesting that the full mod which is available on the PC.The game also has some annoying ads which cover the screen for several seconds while creating a new world; this only happens when the player is not actively in a world which is certainly a positive.

Conclusion

New players will struggle with this game but fans of Minecraft will find the game to be very familiar despite the awkward controls. It's still not that bad of a game and has a lot of replay potential.

Controls can be customized;
