It’s time everybody recognizes Minecraft’s unique cubic looks as a feature, not a compromise. The designers have done a great job of transferring those objects made of cubes into the real world. Characters move even more naturally due to motion capture technology. The freedom of building you had in the classic Minecraft is still here, enabling you to create incredible constructions in recognizable style. The way they fit in the real world is a special sort of pleasure.

Gameplay – 5/5

In short, this one is about Minecraft elements in your real life, visible through the camera. The game supports tabletop mode and lets you build sophisticated constructions to save them and then bring to the street, or to the countryside. The objects you make are uploaded to the cloud with their locations, so other users running into them can see them and interact with them.

The outside building uses virtual cubes 1 meter high, and the buildings may be up to 64 blocks high. This can be even more impressive than you think.

And, of course, there is survival mode, with monsters hunting and haunting you, and the tools and the weapons to craft. You can play it with your friends, fighting flocks together. It goes out to creative mode as well. Collaborating on AR building is a new sort of experience, previously unavailable in Minecraft or AR-based games like Pokémon Go.

Controls – 5/5

It’s a purely mobile game, so its controls are purely touched- and motion-oriented. If you have played Minecraft PE, you’ll easily get with Minecraft Earth. You can easily access the most necessary materials and tools from the inventory via buttons at the bottom of the screen and adjust the settings if you need. And, of course, you will need to move around physically to access the objects you build.

Replay Value – 5/5

Minecraft Earth seems even more replayable than the original version. It lets you go outside and play when sitting on the bench near your house. You can play at work with colleagues, or with friends at parties. Constructing is even more fun when together with other fans. And sharing your masterpieces on social media now is amplified by sharing them on real locations.

The Bottom Line

Minecraft Earth may become even a greater cult than the original Minecraft, because it brings the experience with you wherever you go. There are few really worthy AR games, including Ingress, Pokémon Go, and Harry Potter: Wizards Unite. Minecraft Earth will have little competition to stand, and its potential is as enormous as the buildings you can create with it.
