Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved Review

All the authors that work on this project are required to follow our guidelines. To make the most out of the game testing process, our authors launch it on various smartphones and tablets with not only the latest OS', but also the previous ones.

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions is a multidirectional twin-stick shooter. Firstly launched for Microsoft Windows, OS X, GNU/Linux, PlayStations and Xboxes, it became available on iOS and Android in the middle of 2015. The protagonist destroys hordes of the hostile geometrical figures and tries his best not to get killed. The characteristic feature of the game is its neon volume graphics, that bring staginess into the gameplay. It’s an incredible arcade game with old-school vibes.

This shoot 'em up has an epilepsy warning and you’ll get why as soon as the first level starts. You’ll experience the onslaught of bright and diverse figures, flying right in your face. Three-dimensional grid сubes, sheets, spheres and prisms will be your battlefield. The visuals are so polished and detailed that the game brings pure aesthetic pleasure.

Implementation of geometric 3D graphics was the best decision the developers could make. The player is surrounded by beautiful neon chaos, filled with special effects: the enemies break to vivid sparkles, the playfield changes all the time, bending and waving, incredible fireworks explode in the background.

Gameplay 5/5

You control a small ship, shoot in different directions, destroy shapes, dodge touching them otherwise you lose a life. The gameplay is quite challenging as it’s difficult to retain control when massive amounts of enemy figures attack, shirk and multiply. It looks like all shape and sizes enemies have their distinct personality and different behavior patterns.

Among special features there are Super States (available only in the Adventure mode), the temporary power-ups with helpful effects like increasing the firepower, attracting Geoms or shielding. The Super states are a pattern of dots, which you need to destroy to activate the effect. They only work for 12 seconds.

Over the course of the game you’ll get Drones that follow the player and are permanently active during the match. There are six types of drones - Attack, Collect, Ram, Snipe, Defend and Sweep; you can upgrade each drone four times to raise their effectiveness.

Before the start of each level you choose the special super, a special power-up, which you activate at will. There are six supers currently, each has a unique effect. Homing destroys enemies with homing missiles, Clone gives you an additional drone, Miner releases mines, Black Hole crushes enemies in the area around it, Turret activates turret that shoots bullets rotating clockwise, Detonator transforms the drone into a detonator realizing explosions near the enemies. You can improve your supers upgrading them up to 4 times.

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved has a lot to offer. You get a broad range of main game modes and a variety of special modes within them.

The beginners will enjoy an Adventure mode that consists of a set of levels across a large three-dimensional map. Different game modes alternate as you complete the levels. You’ll come across Deadline, Evolved, Pacifism, Boss, Claustrophobia modes and more. Each mode has its rules, restrictions and requirements: timers, races, the limited number of bombs, lives and supers.

Classic mode is a collection of 6 game modes - Deadline, King, Evolved, Waves, Pacifism and Retro Evolved. You won’t find any power-ups from the Adventure mode here, except for the Retro mode.

Evolved update brought Hardcore mode into the game. In this mode you are challenged to play completely without Drones and Supers.

Controls 5/5

You have two virtual joysticks on the screen sides. One on the left side is charged with your ship’s movement. The joystick on the right side controls aiming and shooting. Control joysticks are not static: they follow your thumbs around the screen.

The game is designed for touch screens, so the controls are simple and highly customizable. You can go with draggable or fixed joysticks, choose to use only one while shooting and targeting is automatic, turn autofire on and off, there is also an option for left-handed people, switching the controls around.

Replay Value 5/5

You can replay games and levels over and over again. Furthermore, sometimes repeating will be your only choice: you can’t pass the level unless you’ve gained at least one star. And, considering the chaos, timers, restrictions and challenging gameplay in tote, don’t expect completing levels will be as easy as pie.

In-app purchases

The game has a good-old progression system: you collect “Geoms” and earn stars to upgrade drones and get supers. The game is completely free of the in-app purchases, so you only splurge ones - buying the app for $ 9.99.

The bottom line

Geometry Wars 3: Dimensions Evolved is a great game, with challenging and engaging gameplay, awesome 3D graphics and smooth animation. We highly recommend to give it a try, especially if you are dual-stick shooters fan.

...I NEVER spend more than .99¢ on apps. Why? Because they always, ALWAYS drop in price; so why did I spend $5 on this app....because I just couldn't wait and GW it FREAKIN' AWESOME!! Geometry Wars since day one has always had a simplistic yet super captivating force about it: The colors are gorgeous, the graphics are simple but stellar, the music is spot on and the smooth frame rate is nothing to complain about. This one for iOS is no different. Now of course you just can't get the accuracy on a touch screen as you can with a controller but the devs made them as great as it could be for touch screen. If you like dual stick shooters then you won't be disappointed. The developers did a great job on this so I definitely don't mind forkin' over 5 bucks to have this game in my back pocket. Do any of you remember the first GW on iOS? For those of you who don't, this game is an immense improvement over the other one; totally worth your money. Check it out! One last thing, if you like games like this, check out all the games by developer Radiangames. "Ballistic SE" is probably closet to Geo Wars and it's a gorgeous game too in its own way. Don't sleep on "Ballistic SE". Updated as of Dec 2, 2016 Just redownloaded this game to play again and it's still awesome. One problem that it looks like others are having too is that my super activates automatically within 2 seconds of starting any level. This is a major problem. And this isn't like every now and then, it happens every time. PLEASE PLEASE FIX THIS!!!!!!

I am giving this game 1-star even though the single player modes are great and a ton of fun. But I have to remove 4 whole stars because I did buy the game primarily for the local multiplayer co-op. And it is that local multiplayer that has a major issue. I have two SteelSeries Nimbus controllers (officially supported on the Apple TV). But the game forces the Apple TV Remote to be one of the players in co-op. So if I have two Nimbus controllers connected, there will be three players (with the remote being one of those players). There is no way to remove the Apple TV Remote as a player, even though I simply want to play 2-players on my two Nimbus controllers. Whats more, there is an option on the co-op screen for Player-2 and Player-3 to press the B-botton to quit. But of course there is no B-button on the Apple TV Remote and pressing the B-button on the additional Nimbus controller does nothing. I am sure this problem can be fixed and I hope it will be fixed soon. Activision is a good company and they probably have someone working on the issue already. I will instantly upgrade my 1-star review to a full 5-stars once the update is released. The game is super fun in single player and I hate to give such a great game a 1-star review. But I did buy the game primarily to play local multiplayer. If you please fix the co-op, this game will be an instant 5-star game. Thank you.

I love this iteration of geometry wars and have played obsessively since downloading. The level progression escalates well, the specials and drones are a fun way to customize your approach, and of course the graphics are top notch. What's really exceptional are the controls. The thumb sticks are so well tuned maneuvering is way intuitive and precise. The problem!!!! Bombs and specials keep going off on their own. The best I can guess is that the bombs go off when you are on a location of a spawning enemy. Even that doesn't seem consistent. If that is the intention I still think it's flawed. I need absolute control of those for them to be beneficial. As it stands the surprise detonation is more of a detriment and challenge to work around than a perk. This is so flawed in fact I have abruptly stopped playing the game and have lost faith in the franchise. It's a fatal flaw for me. Please fix! It's not too late.
