Paper.io is a competitive strategy/puzzle game, which throws you into a static little room with the capacity to grow and the power to destroy. Your goal is to conquer as much space as possible. You have to be more cunning than your adversaries and find the best strategy to take control of the map.
With the basic graphics, enjoyment of Paper.io comes almost exclusively from its gameplay. You will play on a small board shared by 6 power hungry players and try to stay ahead of them. Be careful with your tail — if an enemy touches it, that's the end of the game for you.
Paper.io has the minimalistic graphics, featuring the geometries of the drifting square that feels like a retro callback to pixel art in the 80s. However, the fresh and juicy color palette gives the game a cheerfully updated look.
Collectible pixel avatars, which are reminiscent of Crossy Road, include charming little sprites like a mud-smearing pig, a rainbow-trailing unicorn, a road-laying firetruck, different fruits, sushi, and seasonal options like a decorated tree. And due to the clear palette choice, the overlapping colored territories look nice as they grow.
In Paper.io, you have to direct an ever-moving square to cover as much area on the board as possible. To move your square, you have to swipe left and right or up and down, or tap the screen relative to your previous position.
To gain territory, you need to enclose the area with your tail. The area can be uncontested white space or already taken by another player. Kill your competitors by crossing their tails and be careful with your own as you will die when a player crosses it.
There is a lot of ways to die in the game. If you cross your own path, the game is over. And the same fate awaits when you hit the wall. That’s as simple as that. But something about this gameplay makes it an addictive and engaging experience. And with such an appealing design, Paper.io is even a better pleasure.
Here are some tips how to stay alive a little bit longer:
- Grow your area slowly and be patient, especially if you are a beginner. You can’t be killed when you are in your territory so use it to your advantage.
- Cover area when there are no enemies near you. The easiest way to die is to have your tail crossed so make full use of opportunities when other players are out of sight.
- Expand your territory along your longer boards. This way you can travel a short distance out and retreat to safety quickly in case of danger.
Paper.io has two measurements for success: gold coins which you gain while occupying space and eliminating competitors, and high score which shows how much of the board you’ve conquered in one session. You can use the coins for new avatars, and the high score is just for bragging rights. If you want to unlock more avatars quickly, you can also purchase coin packs via in-game purchases.
The downside is that the game occasionally lags in responsiveness, which can be frustrating if it causes you to run into the wall or get eliminated by another user. There also seems to be a proliferation of bots, which don’t particularly affect the gameplay, but it feels more fun to think you’re battling other players for territory rather than bots.
The controls are simple and easy to master — you move by swiping left, right, up and down. Like in Snake, you can’t reverse your direction, and you die if you cross your tail. So, if you were good at playing Snake on your old Nokia phone, you will find the controls here a piece of cake.
