Bejeweled Classic Review
Bejeweled Classic is a casual match-three game where all you need to do is to build combinations of gems. It might be hard to imagine how a typical monotonous game can attract as much player's attention as Bejeweled does. But it is addictive. No wonder why this game has been popular since the moment of its creation in the early 2000s.
For all time of its existence, this game has brought to PopCap Games company a profit of 400 million euros and about 500 million of players. So, there should be something worthy.
Bejeweled has a fantastic Retina-display graphics which is rare for games of this genre. It fills your playing experience with colorfulness and beautiful animation effects. For instance, joining a combo of 4 gems, you’ll see a stunning burning jewel which can also brightly explode in combination with other gems.
You play with a board full of different jewels such as diamonds, rubies, pearls and a couple of others. The game board consists of 8 cells vertically and horizontally. Your goal is to match three gems or more in a row, column or diagonally. Your score depends on a number of matching jewels. The more you combine them, the more difficult your game becomes.
You can move jewels only up-down or left-right to the neighbor cell. Combining four gems a time gives you an exclusive bonus jewelry which can exempt neighbor cells if you put other stones of the same color right next to it. The combination of 5 jewels in the form of “L” or “T” gives you a precious stone which during the activation destroys all of the gems in its column and row. There are some rare bonus stones that can remove all gems of the same color at one time.
Bejeweled has several game modes. Therefore anybody will find something interesting for himself.
In the traditional Classic mode, you’ll need to collect points all the time to move on. You won’t have any time restrictions in this mode. Also, if you go to the new level, all your unused bonuses will go with you. This can be helpful when the difficulty of the game increases.
The Lightning mode gives you only 1 minute to get as many points as you can. Some of the gems can decrease your time restriction, but not more than a few times.
The Diamond Mine mode is similar to the Lightning one; it also involves time limits. But there is dirt underneath the board. Matching gems above the dirt clears some of it. Some spots can have special bonuses inside them, but the timer doesn’t leave you any time to think about a strategy. So you play this game only with your luck and intuition.
Another mode has gems with suddenly appearing butterflies. Gradually, they rise and can be captured at the top by a spider. Your goal is to combine the gems with butterflies in a row with other same colored jewels and exempt the winged creatures. If spider catches a butterfly - the game ends. You won’t have time limits here, but when the number of butterflies increases, monitoring of them gets harder.
If you don’t want to play with any restrictions, the mode Zen is for you. You can collect there endlessly any stones combinations. This mode’s gameplay is identical to the Classic one, but Zen more focused on relaxation. You can choose a backdrop of ambient sounds, like ocean waves or crickets chirping. You can have the game display positive phrases onscreen. There’s even a breathing modulation option, which helps you to relax your body and relieve stress.
There are also such game modes as Ice Storm and Poker.
The game controls are the simplest. All you have to do is swiping up-down and left-right to move gems and, as a result, get right combinations of them.
Replay Value 4.5/5
The principle of the game is obvious. It is similar to other “match-3” games out there. But due to its different game modes, you're bound to lose a few hours a day on it. Bejeweled will entertain you or relax and make stick with it for some time.
One point that should be noticed: there are plenty of different adds in the game. It can be incredibly distracting while you’re trying to focus on playing. But there is also a paid upgrade that can remove all the adds. You may also disable in-app purchasing option using your device settings.
If you are looking for a fun game to kill some time while waiting in a line, Bejeweled is what you need. It’s easy to understand and fun to play, but still, can keep you entertained for couple hours.
However, this game doesn't have a feature of connection with other online players. So you are not able to check any real leaderboard. Although, the game does have a lot of rewards and achievements, including a great ranking system. It offers achievement-like badges, as well. But it doesn’t make any sense to get them because nobody will see these achievements except you.
Bejeweled is an addictive, great-looking traditional match-3 game that started this genre and is still extremely popular.
