Dragon City Review
Dragon City is a free social networking game that features dragon-themed battles and town management. You will build and decorate your magical, floating city, hatch a lot of dragon eggs and breed them to discover new species.
Train and upgrade your dragons to form your own combat team and battle against opponents around the world, thereby unlocking new treasures and bonuses. Dragon City is connected to the Facebook version so that you can take care of your dragons anytime and everywhere.
Dragon city is a good-looking port, but the graphics are not as sharp as the ones on a Facebook version. Sometimes, you will notice the game is quite blurry depending on effects and dragons. However, the dragons still are beautifully designed and look cute. And the cartoon-style animations are simply amazing.
The sound effects sound “desktop,” but they feel natural to this game. There are also different sounds for dragon growls.
Dragon City is a builder game, so mostly you will try to build the best city possible. However, the key feature of the game is dragons and being able to breed them. There are at least nine elements of dragons you can combine and make cool hybrids.
The second important feature is the battles. Once your dragons are ready, you can use them to fight other dragons for gems and other goods. You will be prepping a team of three dragons, and to prep them well, you need to grow your island building farms and habitats for them to evolve. Plus, you can decorate your island as you wish using resources you collect during the game.
Dragon City is fun, at first, and feels quite satisfying, given the relatively short amount of time it takes to wait for things to conclude. However, after some time, the objectives list begins to repeat itself with minor differences to previous tasks. Besides, it can take many hours to complete higher level tasks which mean you are left with nothing to do but wait. And this is where the urge to spend real cash comes to play as it speeds things up significantly. With so little diversity in gameplay, though, it feels less appealing.
The process of gaining a new breed is slow. You will have to wait a set time for two dragons to breed and create an egg, and then have to wait just as long for the egg to hatch. Some other tasks require recruiting friends. Without any of the small tasks on hand, it's tempting to just close the Dragon City Mobile and forget all about it.
The game is connected with Facebook, so you can continue your game through your browser from where you left it off.
Wrapping up all the features, Dragon City allows you to:
- Breed your dragons and prep them for battles;
- Fight against opponents online;
- Upgrade your own Dragon City.
Overall, controls are just a mindless tapping on buildings, collecting resources, and prepping your team to battles. Thus, the game is pretty simple. Just don’t forget to check out your structures, farms, and do lots of tapping to collect different things, which appear on the screen.
Although it might get tiring after some time, it also can be an entertaining distraction, when you are bored or just want to relax after a busy day.
Replay Value 4/5
Dragon City can get boring pretty soon as it has repetitive tasks and makes you wait all the time. However, it’s worth to replay for its battles where you compete with players around the world, and no battle will be the same.
Dragon City has plenty of in-app purchases, which aim to speed up the game allowing you to skip all the waiting for your dragons to evolve, egg to hatch and farms to be built.
The purchases here are in the form of packs of gems which range in price from $0,99 for Boost Pack to $19,99 for Box of Gems.
While the mobile version isn’t an exact port of Facebook game as it lacks some features, Dragon City is still well developed for mobile devices. The social battle system is a refreshing experience to have with your friends and family.
However, once it starts to rely on Facebook too heavily, it becomes the game’s major weakness. You will constantly need the help of your friends in some missions. For example, after buying the habitats for your dragons, you will need to hire friends to open them. And such missions get worse as you advance in the game.
You will also have to invite new players into the game for some buildings as you can’t select friends who are already playing Dragon City. That means that adding Dragon City friends will only go so far. So, the restrictive portion to the Facebook social network holds the game back.Collapse
Dragon City is a social networking game that has cool dragons with breathtaking animations.
Pros : Cool Dragons design;
Over 500 dragons to breed and collect;
New dragons every week through breeding events;
You get gems for leveling up or winning battles.
Cons : Relies on Facebook too heavily: need you to invite new players to the game;
Not fully optimized to mobile devices;
The game crashes sometimes.
