Boggle With Friends review

Boggle With Friends brings the fun and nostalgia of the classic Boggle game with new exciting puzzling twists. As you spell and match your way through the game, you can chat with you family and friends in the quest to find words and earn points. For the first time in a Boggle game, you can compete in head-to-head online tournaments and fast single round tournaments to show off your puzzle skills, earning rewards and power-ups along the way.

It’s clear that the game is hoping for you to invite friends as you have to link it to your Facebook or email account to be able to play. However, if you are finding yourself a little short on friends, or you just don’t want to play with your cousin Henry, don’t worry. Boggle With Friends is still fun to fly solo, especially

with the Smart Match system and bundles of tournaments available.

Graphics 4,5/5

Boggle with Friends is an enjoyable, good-looking but unremarkable game. The interface has just all you need to have a fun battle with your friends or random players online, providing you with a clean and crisp look without any distractions. It features the classic Boggle lettering and layout, as well as the thoughtfully compiled stats.

The colors are bright and eye-catching, which are perfect for creating a light-hearted and relaxing atmosphere.

Gameplay 4,5/5

Boggle With Friends feels remarkably similar to another game from Zynga, Word Streak With Friends. In fact, if you have an active account in Word Streak, you can use it to sign in for Boggle With Friends and have all your stats and game information automatically imported. This extra information will help Smart Match work even smarter and faster so that you can get better matches right out of the gate.

Boggle With Friends has a slightly modified version of the rules where two-letter words are allowed. So, “do,” “re,” ‘me,” “fa” are at your service.

The game offers four types of power-ups, and each of them confers slight but significant advantages to those who use them. Freeze temporarily stops the clock, Inspiration gives you three hints helping you find words you have not yet uncovered, Spin shakes the board and lets you see things differently, and Vision provides you with some words you haven’t found yet to try them after.

Boggle With Friends also features two “mega” power-ups: mega inspire and mega freeze. Occasionally you can get one of these power-ups through in-game activity, though stumbling upon them is rare, so they are more of an in-app purchase here – and not a cheap one.

The advantages conferred by this kind of power-ups are enormous. Mega inspire shows you eight of the highest scoring words available on the board while mega freeze stops the clock for one minute, which is 50% of the game. If you have one of those, but your opponent doesn’t, it’s almost impossible to lose.

Controls 5/5

The controls are simple and straightforward. You just have to swipe to spell words, earning points along the way. They work smooth and don’t lag on compatible devices.

Replay Value 5/5

Since you play against real people, every game won’t ever be similar to another. You can compete with your friends, family, or let the game pick an opponent in Smart Match at any time and anywhere.

Plus, Boggle With Friends has fun daily challenges and a prize wheel where you have a chance to win some sweet rewards. Then, you can use these rewards to your advantage in the live tournaments to climb the leaderboard and become the sharpest speller.

In-app purchases

Boggle With Friends is free to play; however, it offers some in-app purchases that range from $0.99 to $99.99.

While theoretically if you are a weaker player, even a mega power-ups won’t keep you safe from a grandmaster, using the game’s matching algorithm, the odds of finding yourself in such situation are slim to none. That’s why some players have voiced concern about “pay to play system” — power-ups give a significant advantage in close battles.

However, if you are playing lots of matches, it won’t be a major issue. You won’t be running into a player with mega power-up every single time. Yet, this system is becoming a common part of the mass casual game landscape, so Boggle With Friends is in line with its competitors.

Boggle With Friends is a social take on an old classic word game with a few twists, which will be either adored or reviled. It’s an entertaining brain trainer with good-looking visuals, smooth controls, and strong player matching system

If you are a fan of the genre, this game will probably be the one to enjoy, but if you are looking for something fresh and different, then you might want to pass on.
