Has anyone ever heard the word “scrabble” before the game? Yes, in fact, it’s a real verb, but now it’s most widely used as, literally, “the name of the game.” The game has become popular in the late 1950s and ever since that time it only gained more popularity. Today the game is published by Hasbro in USA and Canada and Mattel in the rest of the world.
All it takes is a large vocabulary and correct spelling. And along with the victory it gives you that feeling of being smarter, the main reason why we discuss politics and watch all those stupid TV games. Anyway, when you are at the desk, you don’t feel that smarter-than-them; the more precious is the experience.
When popular games went digital, Scrabble had to be among the first. Its intellectual attractiveness along with network possibilities was to combine into the word “victory” in the right cells. The game is available for all actual platforms, mobile, desktop and web-based.
Games like Scrabble are not meant to astonish with unreal or hyper-real graphical part. In fact, the designers have only to imitate a special game board, and it’s done perfectly.
In Settings, you can switch between Classic board, Modern board, and good old Legacy board for free. Tiles style is also adjustable.
The greatest problem was in making the game board look equally good on large tablet screens and small phones. But it looks perfectly in both cases. It takes a double tap to zoom the gameboard in or out. The game has been designed for many different types of devices: iPhone and iPad separately, Amazon devices and generic Android, and so on.
The developers have taken all the advantages that Internet adds to Scrabble intellectual potential. The essence of the game remains the same: you need to create words from random letters given to you. But the ways you play it now get much more various.
Built-in enhancements leave no need to run to your bookshelf for the dictionary; it’s already there. Type the word you intend to use to check its spelling and meaning. Sometimes your semantic intuition can help you enhance your active lexicon.
The teacher is a built-in adviser that gets activated after you have made your move. It rates your decision and tells you whether it has been possible to get a bigger score with a longer word. We recommend you to use it often; it helps you with both improving your results and upgrading your lexicon.
Shuffle is a small but useful tool. Shuffle the letters you have to see different combinations possible. You can use it with no limitations like you would with your real tiles.
Of course, all these features require Internet access. Even if you play in Single Play mode when you compete against an AI with adjustable intelligence level.
Access to social services lets you authorize with your Facebook account, challenge your friends and accept their challenges. This mode is called simply “Play with Friends.” The system notifies you when anyone of your friends goes online and suggests you challenge them. Built-in chat is meant for informal communication while you play.
Random Opponent is just what you think. The system selects a random opponent from Facebook or Origin users, so you play.
Play with Friends allows you to invite your Facebook friends to the game. Pass N Play is meant for playing against a friend using your phone or tablet as a gameboard with virtual tiles. Speed Play requires you invent as many words in limited time as you can.
If you play against a remote rival, you’ll get notified each time they have made their moves. You may turn notifications off in the settings section.
As you play, you get different achievements like start 10 games, invite a friend, score a necessary sum, and get rewarded for them. Of course, you can share all your victories and achievements through social media from within the app.
And yes, there are limitations in help you can overcome if you pay some coins. The coins can be received as a reward for your achievements or purchased for real money.
The game is now available in 6 languages; it’s English, French, Italian, German, Spanish, or Brazilian Portuguese. The supported language includes the interface, dictionaries, all additional features localized into it. The developers will probably add more languages as they promote to new markets. But even now, if you wish to master some of these languages, Scrabble is a good bit of edutainment in your pocket.
The only thing that can spoil your impression if you play free Scrabble is a lot of ads. Yes, it seems necessary for keeping EA Scrabble free. But some would gladly pay to get rid of those pop-ups and banners at the top.
There’s nothing to invent or discover: all you need is to drag letters onto the gameboard. The way it’s done is shown in the tutorial.
In Settings, you can adjust sounds and music volume, select the appearance and edit your profile. That’s it. And tell us with your right hand on Webster’s: would you need anything else? That’s the art, in fact: making the game so perfect that you will hardly need to adjust anything.
Replay Value 5/5
Scrabble has almost unlimited replayability. It depends on your mood, on your opponent, on your lexicon and your wish to upgrade it. If you like it at all, you'll feel tired of it no sooner than you run out of words.
It’s the Scrabble, that good old Scrabble app combined with the power of today’s Internet as a query and a gaming zone. Yes, we’d like to have more languages and at least a paid Pro version with ads off.Collapse
